Coprosma quadrifida – Native Currant / Prickly Currant Bush – 5x Seeds(Coprosma quadrifida)
Coprosma quadrifida, commonly known as the Native Currant or Prickly Currant Bush, is a hardy Australian native shrub that produces small, glossy red berries and dense, spiny foliage. Found naturally across south-eastern Australia, it’s an excellent choice for native hedges, wildlife habitat gardens, and bush tucker plantings.
This evergreen shrub typically grows 2–3 metres tall and forms a dense, twiggy structure ideal for bird shelter and nesting. Small, inconspicuous greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by clusters of edible red-orange berries that attract birds and native fauna. The berries can also be eaten raw or made into jams. Coprosma quadrifida thrives in full sun to part shade and adapts to most soil types, tolerating frost, coastal exposure, and dry periods once established.

Bush food: The fruit is usually eaten raw, also nice in pies, cakes and tarts, the roasted seed is an excellent coffee substitute. Early settlers in Australia used the fruit in puddings and other sweet deserts.Germination: Seed benefits from pre-treatment with an acid type substance to trigger germination. They can be placed in a container and covered with any type of vinegar and left to soak for a minimum 24 hours to several days before rinsing and sowing.
Coprosma Nitida 'Currant Bush' seeds are only a few millimeters in size. As a general rule Coprosma Nitida 'Currant Bush' seeds should be sown to the depth of the seed.
Although most Australian native/ endemic seed can be sown throughout the seasons across Australia it is advisable to sow in Spring or Summer in colder regions. The optimum temperate to ensure the best possible germination rate for sowing many Australian native/ endemic species is around 18-22°C.

Seeds of many native/endemic species require specific conditions that mimic their natural habitat or specially formulated seed treatments, to break dormancy.
Do not be to quick to discard pots that haven't yet shown signs of seed germination. Seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are optimal and will produce amazing results, long after they have been forgotten.
Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended for most native species.Research shows that many members of this species are responsive to pre-treatment of smoke, which mimics an Australian bushfire. Although germination will may occur without smoke treatment it has proved be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates of this species.Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken by applying to the surface after sowing.
