Dianella longifolia – Smooth Flax Lily – 10x Seeds
(Dianella longifolia)

Dianella longifolia, commonly known as the Smooth Flax Lily, is a hardy, clumping Australian native perennial prized for its graceful, strappy green foliage and delicate blue to violet flowers that appear in spring and summer, followed by clusters of glossy purple berries. It’s an excellent choice for native gardens, borders, and mass planting where year-round texture and colour are desired.

Growing to around 60–100 cm tall, the Smooth Flax Lily thrives in full sun to part shade and adapts to a wide range of soils, including sandy, clay, or loamy types. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, frost-hardy, and requires very little maintenance. It’s also ideal for erosion control, understory planting, and landscape revegetation projects.

Bush Food Use
Edible parts:

  • Ripe berries have been eaten by Aboriginal peoples in several regions of Australia.

  • They’re described as sweet but bland, sometimes slightly nutty or grassy.

  • The berries are safe to eat when fully ripe (deep blue to purple, soft, and glossy).

An elegant, low-maintenance native grass-like plant that provides structure, colour, and resilience to both modern and natural garden designs.
