Historically, the plant's roots were used to make the original marshmallow confection, though modern marshmallows no longer use it. The roots, leaves, and flowers are rich in mucilage, making them useful in herbal medicine for soothing coughs, sore throats, and skin irritations. Marshmallow plants thrive in moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, typically growing in marshy or coastal areas.
