Platanus orientalis, also known as - Oriental Plane Tree and Sycamore Tree is one of the world's most magnificent, large, deciduous trees.
Platanus Orientalis is a fast growing tree, growing 3-5m in the first 5 years, that will grow into a very large, awe-inspiring garden specimen, best suited as a feature or as part of a large landscape, often used in municipal parklands and along driveways at large country estates.
Platanus orientalis, the Old World Sycamore or Oriental Plane, is a large, deciduous tree of the Platanaceae family, growing to 15m or more, and known for its longevity and spreading crown. In autumn its deep green leaves change to blood red, amber, and yellow.
Prefers well-drained soils and is drought and frost tolerant.
Aa general rule Platanus Orientalis seed should be sown to the depth of the seed.
Soak in warm water for 24 hours before placing in the freezer for around 6 weeks. This is called cold stratification & helps to with quicker germination when the seeds hits warm potting mix.
What does it mean to stratify seeds? In horticulture, stratification is a process of treating seeds to simulate natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur. Many seed species have an embryonic dormancy phase, and generally will not sprout until this dormancy is broken. We recommend placing your seeds in some damp potting mix, in the freezer or fridge.
See above. The seed will lodge in the pores of your seed starting mix once misted with water.
Spring & AutumnPlace in a warm sunny position and keep moist to avoid drying out.
Seeds of many tree species require specific conditions that mimic their natural habitat or specially formulated seed treatments, to break dormancy.
Do not be to quick to discard pots that haven't yet shown signs of seed germination. Seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are optimal and will produce amazing results, long after they have been forgotten.
