A popular ornamental used in landscaping its notable features include the red stems in fall (autumn) through late winter, the brightest winter bark of any Cornus variety. 

It is in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from August to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects.
